6 Essential Travel Abroad Must-Haves You Can't Leave Home Without

It doesn’t matter if it’s your first time traveling abroad or you're a seasoned globetrotter, there are certain things you should always have in your suitcase. Start your adventures with confidence, knowing that you're well-prepared for whatever surprises await. Let’s take a look at what we aren’t leaving home without:

  1. Valid Passport and Travel Documents: Hello Captain Obvious! How can you cross the border without these? Well, you’d be surprised how often these things can be overlooked! Make sure your passport is up-to-date and valid beyond your return date. Also, check visa requirements for your destination and have all your ducks in a row. Having these documents ready will save you from unnecessary stress at the border and allow you to focus on the excitement of your adventure.

  2. Universal Power Adapter and Portable Charger: Having a universal adapter is a travel must-have. It’s such a small investment but we promise this will make a huge difference in your travel experience. Different countries have different electrical outlets and an adapter will ensure you’re able to charge your devices no matter where you are. If you’re like us, we depend heavily on our phones for maps, tickets to attractions, and taking photos to capture special memories. In this digital age, our electronics can feel like an extension of our being. If you don’t have an adapter here is what we use.

Packing a portable charger is a practical and versatile solution for staying powered up and connected wherever your adventures take you. A portable charger provides convenient access to power for your electronic devices when you're away from traditional power sources, such as electrical outlets. In unexpected situations where your phone or other devices run out of battery power, a portable charger serves as a reliable emergency backup. It provides peace of mind knowing that you have a backup power source available to make calls, send messages, or access navigation tools in case of emergencies. We have several chargers we like for iPhones and Androids.

  3. Cash and Credit Cards: Having some local currency in your pocket can come in handy when visiting remote areas or local markets. To purchase a currency before your travels you’ll need to visit your local bank. It can take anywhere from 2 - 6 weeks to order money depending on the currency you need. Additionally, you’ll want to inform your bank of your travel to avoid any issues with using your card during your time aboard.

While credit cards are widely accepted, it’s important to check with your credit card company about foreign transaction fees. These fees might seem small but can add up rather quickly. We try to select a credit card with a low annual fee and travel perks to use abroad. Our preference is to use the United Airlines Visa Card or Southwest Airlines Visa Card.

  4. Medicine and Travel-sized Toiletries: A healthy traveler is a happy traveler. Your well-being is a priority so be aware of health precautions or when vaccinations are required. We travel with basic medical supplies like bandages, pain relievers, hand sanitizer, tissues, and Liquid IV. Depending on where you’re traveling the medicine you’re used to might not be available. Don’t forget many airlines have regulations on the size of liquid and creams you travel with. Pack travel-sized toiletries like toothpaste, shampoo, sunscreen, contact solution, and anything else you need to look and feel your best. We like to buy reusable travel-sized bottles that we can fill on our own. Here is what we use!

  5. Snacks and a Reusable Water Bottle: Pack small snacks like protein bars, jerky, crackers, and mints. No one wants to travel with a hangry person! Not only does having snacks on hand help to save the mood, but it can also save money and provide you with a quick energy boost.

Staying hydrated when traveling is essential. We both carry a reusable water bottle with us and use a carabiner to attach it to our backpacks when necessary. Many airports and attractions will have refillable water stations where you can replenish and carry it with you during your excursions.

  6. Comfortable Clothing and Rain Gear: Comfort is key! When you are visiting an unfamiliar it is so important to dress to adapt to expected and unexpected activities and weather. We both pack versatile clothing that can be layered if the temperature changes. It could be that we visit a lot of rainy locations, but we’ve learned it doesn’t ever hurt to have a mini umbrella with you. The amount of times it has saved our behinds is well worth the low cost. It’s something easy to keep in a backpack or again hang off a carabiner with your water bottle.

When you prepare for your next adventure, keeping in mind thoughtful planning can enhance your experience. Packing these 6 essentials - a valid passport, universal power adapter, local currency, toiletries, snacks, and comfy clothes - will ensure you are ready for the road ahead.
