A Guide to Budget-Friendly Air Travel: Finding Cheap Flights

We always get the question, “Courtney, Nick, how can you afford to travel so often? Doesn’t it cost a lot?” And our response is simple – it all starts with cheap flights.

With a bit of strategy and know-how, traveling doesn’t have to break the bank. If you’re looking to go on an adventure and are what we say “balling on a budget” one of the best ways to save money is through reduced airfare. Here is a guide on everything we do and you need to know to find travel deals on flights.

Use Flight Comparison Websites

This is the number one travel rule in our household. If we’re looking to get away we use websites like Skyscanner and Google Flights to find our cheapest options. Tools like these will allow you to compare flights across different airlines, while searching flexible dates, and track prices.

Set Fare Alerts

Both websites referenced above (Skyscanner and Google Flights) allow you ro sign up for notifications. We have several notifications going at all times that let us know when flight prices have dropped.

Be Flexible with Travel Dates

It is very rare that you will see us traveling on a Friday or Sunday when airfare tends to spike. Often we will find cheaper flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and sometimes even Saturdays.

Avoid traveling in peak tourist season. Instead try traveling durin shoulder season, before or after the peak season. We’ve gotten very lucky when visiting countries like Italy and Scotland using this tactic.

Book in Advance

While some might like the idea of a spontaneous trip, and it’s not impossible to find a good deal, they are rare. If you’re looking for reliability in savings look within your optimal booking window. Internationals flights should be booked 2 - 8 months in advance, while domestic U.S. flights should be about 1 - 3 months ahead.

Use Airline Miles and Points

Sign up for frequent flyer programs and credit card offers. These programs are designed to accumulate miles which you can redeem for free or discounted flights. If you are approved for a credit card, you will earn additional points that may be redeemed. Many cards will also offer a sign-up bonus that will likely cover at least one, if not more flights.

Consider Alternative Airports

Check out flights from airports that are nearby for cheaper fare. If you decide to do this, be sure you factor in the additional travel time and cost for traveling from these locations.

Use Social Media

Follow airlines on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and X as they frequently post promotions and deals. This is the best way to learn of flash sales and discounts.

Travel Light

Do you really need to take 5 pairs of sneakers? Save on baggage and pack only a carry-on. Don’t forget to check weight and size restrictions. Not all airlines have the same carry-on policies. When packing your bag, choose clothing that is versatile, wearing heavier, bulkier items rather than packing them.

Fly Budget Airlines

If you are okay with just basic flights, meaning no service or extra-frills, airlines like Ryanair, Southwest, and EasyJet offer flights at significantly lower prices. But, be aware that extra amenities like checked baggage, seat selection, and headphones can come at a cost.

Next time you take a fight do your research. Flexibility and planning ahead, partnered with resources like Skyscanner and Google Flights can help you significantly cut down on airfare costs. With cheaper flights, you’ll have more money to spend on your travel activities and hopefully even travel more often.
